On-the-job training, or OJT, is a programme designed to help employees receive first-hand experience and hands-on knowledge in the workplace from a co-worker or supervisor.
When undergoing OJT, employees learn the processes and procedures that the employer uses. Employees may also learn how to operate any equipment, tools or machinery required for the position. Part of OJT may include job shadowing or observing an experienced employee perform certain job tasks.
The purpose of OJT is to prepare employees for their position. The instructions and hands-on practice completed, help employees develop skills, competencies and knowledge required to carry out their roles at the company or organisation. When OJT is complete, employees should be able to perform most or all of the tasks for their position without supervision.
The course is ideal for managers, HR team members and experienced co-workers who lead and provide training or transfer knowledge to their subordinates or co-workers.
Upon completion of the course, participants would be able to:
- Identify the training needs for trainees
- Design and deliver the on-the-job training effectively
- Review and monitor the effectiveness of on-the-job training
